I woke up at 3:00 am on the West Coast and watched the whole thing. My mother in the next room had the TV on so I expected to be waken up anyway. She was a civil servant in one of the former colonies and was grateful for the opportunity (we were one of the natives).
While I am indifferent to the monarchy after QEII passed, I can say they definitely provide intangible values. Visiting Versailles or Hofburg felt like going to Disney Land, whereas Buckingham Palace felt like living history.
