I woke up at 3:00 am on the West Coast and watched the whole thing. My mother in the next room had the TV on so I expected to be waken up anyway. She was a civil servant in one of the former colonies and was grateful for the opportunity (we were one of the natives).

While I am indifferent to the monarchy after QEII passed, I can say they definitely provide intangible values. Visiting Versailles or Hofburg felt like going to Disney Land, whereas Buckingham Palace felt like living history.

Thanks Holly for sharing your experience in Kenya. Must have been very interesting and eye-opening.

One more thing, I am glad that I am not a caretaker one of those castles. I have enough troubles maintaining my folks’ house built in the early 90’s.
