I loved this song as a kid. Has been done so many times… wow.
I was blessed to grow in a musical family - one cousin had her own music conservatory for awhile and taught many instruments. I took up violin at one point about fifteen years ago because I couldn’t afford a cello. About a year later, I let my son take the violin to trade towards an electric bass for himself - a violin can’t be a cello.
I’m sorry you had to learn that the hard way. It is a valuable lesson, and a lot of us seem to learn it the hard way. So many of us are put in a world where only 100% is acceptable, and none of us are capable of it, so people better at some things make it so easy for us to not see our own valuable traits.
My wife is a wonderful musician and singer. She was shocked to discover that I am totally tone deaf... but at least I knew it from the beginning. Thanks for another encouraging post.
Great post. I am still stuck at how you convinced Kevin to shave his head and he had a perm in high school. Appreciate you doing the hard work and giving space to others to deal with this darkness.
"I do think each of us need to find and use our voices, especially now. And we need to let others have theirs, especially now. We need to worry less about comparisons or performance or embarrassment or fear than we used to."
So... I finished the first draft of an anti-authoritarian oratorio this Good Friday.
I think I'm worrying somewhat less about comparisons, performance, and embarrassment now, but somewhat more about copyrights (since it was my bright idea to use a translation of the Bible by a still-living poet rather than one already in the public domain), registration, and the impracticality of convincing anyone, ever, to try singing the thing!
Lou Reed is one of the most important voices in rock n roll history. He can hold a note sometimes. But damn I am glad he raised that off key voice of his and tested it against the busted and broken down world around him.
That's such a sweet story. I hope Kevin reclaims his off-key voice -- a quality he shares with my dear fella -- and resumes singing his heart out. No one will stop my former clown (for real) from singing along with his favorite songs, loudly and untunefully.
I have always loved singing, and had a loud voice to boot. Once in church I convinced myself that I could fashion a high harmony on a particularly boisterous song out of thin air (so to speak). I was grooving to my own ability when a friend across the way caught my eye with a look that mingled horror and pity.
I still sing (occasionally, well) but try to not to get too far ahead of myself.
Thank you for this honest, loving and truthful romp, Holly! I think that as time passes, Kevin will get his voice back and join in again in singing. I chuckled and smiled big the entire way through this piece. May you all enjoy a wonderful Father's day weekend. Peace be with you!
Dang Holly, how do you not know the Allman Brothers? With all due respect, there is no comparison between Sarah McLachlan and the Allman Brothers. Totally different genres, nonetheless. Poor Kevin. And now I have a Blue Sky ear worm tonight. That said, you do have a lovely voice and the choir will love you. It's a win for them. As to the last part, I always look at those notes like maybe self reminders or just sending it out there in the universe. Even if our one thing is getting out of bed that day. Or helping someone out of theirs. No worries.
The Sesame Street ending was the best. Thanks I really needed the levity today.
LOL well let's see...my parents are fundamentalists who stopped listening to most secular music circa 1965...then moved me to Africa pre-internet so...I have quite a few gaps in my pop culture knowledge. But I'm now fairly expert on the ABB thanks to Kevin.
Ha! This is just plain ol' good stuff. My wife is a fantastic singer and the darling of local community theater - and often walks around singing Mary Poppins songs. Me on the other hand, eh no. But it is nice to have a partner who is a practically perfect match! ☺️☺️
I have to say that Blue Sky is the PERFECT wedding song!
Hoo boy, I can so relate to Kevin’s situation… you might say it strikes “chord” with me.
Your husband has great taste. Duane Allman is the greatest guitarist EVER,HANDS DOWN

I have no legal advice!

Loved the post, thank you.
The only thing I disagree with is calling your dog ridiculous. Who doesn't run in circles sometimes?

Keep belting it out!

Sing on sister.

I know Holly... it was just too good for me not to take that bait.
