Holly, what you are writing is not useless. You have channeled all my fears and anger eloquently. I reckon 75-90% of Americans are like passengers on the Titanic but do not know it, even after it just hit the iceberg. I just saw RFK Jr. was confirmed, and I am sure Kash Patel will follow. As an immigrant and a person of color, I am eternally grateful for my folks’ decision to come here decades ago. I would have never had the opportunities afforded to me otherwise. But I did have a deep seated fear one day my country will turn on my kind. I tried my hardest over the last 8 years and our efforts fell short. But I am going to quote Andre Agassi (by way of the Triad): Just keep fighting and maybe something good may happen.
Holly, you have no idea how many of us are howling in the wind. You are not alone. There really is a whole pack supporting you and hanging on to your words. Stay strong 💜
Your loyal friend in 🇨🇦is watching in disbelief at the complicity of so many American religionists. I won’t call them Christians out of respect for Jesus whom they clearly have either never truly met or have relegated to subservience to their real Orange Messiah. It’s nothing short of sickening, disgusting and evil, not to mention blasphemous.
Hey lady! Just read your newsletter which reminded me that I forgot to share your FBook post, which I finally did. Thank you for all you are doing and continue to do for our country. I know it seems hopeless sometimes but believe me when I say that it really makes a difference. My BIL lives in rural Georgia (the state - not the country) and while we have great times and conversations together when it comes to family and such, we generally disagree (sometimes vehemently) on the political scene. Last night we were on FBook (I'm in STL) discussing the DOGE vs. "fraud" phenomenon and I was detailing all of the various departments/entities Musk had been targeting while pointing out that crazy coincidence that they were the same ones regulating, investigating and/or fining his various companies. My BIL said: "Brother, you make a valid point. I can honestly say I haven't thorught of it from that angle." Soooooooo...keep up the hard work and PLEASE keep shouting into that void. You never know when a willing ear may be listening.
Holly, my name is Shirley Schuette, and I live in Little Rock. I saw your posts on Lorene Fletcher Burroughs Facebook page and started following you. My husband David, who died in 2006, and Keith's father John were first cousins. I'm grateful for Facebook that has allowed me to stay in touch with some members of David's family, and I am grateful to find your voice. Thank you for what you are doing.
Holly, Much encouragement and gratitude from this soul. For this I am so thankful for your equipping wind-howling:
“I have a feeling if my writing does any good, it helps crystallize the thinking of those who already agree with me and maybe equip them to talk to their loved ones. I hope.”
Writing your article is good. Your feelings are out of your head and shared with others, which I feel is important not only for your mental health but also for the rest of us who are looking for those gems to hang on to.
The conservatives and those who vote for them are like white teenagers in the 1960s who, having lived with almost no problems did not appreciate the hard work their parents faced in order to create middle class lives. Hence the anti intellectual aspects of the late 1960s as sex drugs and rock & roll seemed enough to guide ones life. Of course that era collapsed on itself.
The post WW2 order was one that took effort - even took drastic changes as we left the gold standard and as women entered the work force after the advent of the Pill.
This order was imperfect and it seems many factory workers lost ground. But can we suggest no one knew what the future would bring? And for Americans, we had a currency everyone accepted - oil is priced in dollars. And travel which was a luxury before WW2 has become a possibility for most of the middle class.
In the US and much of the West we accommodated many once considered foreigners, so Asians etc. And a generally world wide culture exists, placed into most homes on large televisions and smart phones.
So now the conservatives want to roll it all back. The rural folks seem to forget how much corn and soybeans US farmers sell abroad. They also want non whites not to remind us of the sins of our past and sexual minorities to go back in the closet.
We can repeat the 20th century all over. But I hope conservatives at least allow the laws that keep the water and air clean.
What you wrote is great. Did it meet with any acceptance from the skeptics? I've got a few in my life who, if the worst happens and we fall into honest to god authoritarianism, will either deny it or say it's what they wanted all along.
I don't know. I just throw the spaghetti on the wall. I have a feeling if my writing does any good, it helps crystallize the thinking of those who already agree with me and maybe equip them to talk to their loved ones. I hope.
Thank you for helping us find other voices such as Kristin's. I am now a subscriber to her Substack. Once again, you bring very thoughtful and enlightened words that help all of us understand our current reality.
You and I are looking at and experiencing the current situation in the same way. I was on Facebook last night posting, sharing and commenting on like minded friends posts, just as you have written about your own experiences. Thank you for saying it so much better than I could have done.

Thank you Shirley! Lorene has been so supportive. I'm glad to hear she is not alone in the state of Arkansas!

I appreciate your clear summary of reality , wish there were more answers or actions to take listed Thankyou

Thank you, Holly! I standing and screaming with you!
What you're doing is worthwhile. Many of us are trying to do the same. Maybe we'll change some minds! Maybe not. But we gotta try.
This is me, too. But the incompetence and cruelty will, ultimately, awaken just enough. I hope and trust.
