What if, just if, the secret to salvation lies entirely in our hands, and Jesus will return only when we do what he has told us to do? No freebies!

Nobody knows where they're going after they die, but if there is a God and that God is anything like love itself, then the question of what did you do for the least of these is the only question to ask. Ernst is willfully cutting off any chance she has for connection and community and maybe even a golden pass through at the Pearly Gates. In her case, I must say I hope hell is: she has to watch those she threw off Medicaid expire needlessly. Over and over. Maybe 14 million times for starters. Where did she get this fictional number of illegals receiving ineligible benefits? Same place as the other tripe Repulsivcans peddle. Way to hit the nail! ~Linda Clare at The Deep End

I was raised Protestant and am an atheist, so ignore this or accept my apology if I inadvertently offend. I really don't mean to.

I struck upon a new question (for me) while talking to my wife after listening to Ernst's....thing. Regarding the afterlife in the sort being espoused by the good Senator. I know she/they do not believe in reincarnation (right?). So the deal is that you are on this earth for whatever time you're here and if you act right the payoff is eternal life?

That seems to me to be a really good deal. I mean I have to live a good life for whatever my time on earth is ,and in return I get *eternal* life. But it raises some questions for me. First, I think that the life we have here on earth is not generally described in this scenario as being a cake walk. Living it like a good Christian certainly doesn't make it any easier. So in that sense, from an eternal- life-actuarial-perspective, the sooner I can get hit by a bus, the better, right?

I mean in this scenario to die young is hitting the jackpot, right?

No, Holly nails it. The trick is to be a good person in the time you have, and to do it even if you know there's probably really no reward coming to you if you do.

As a young person, I also wondered why, if heaven was so great, we didn’t just all kill ourselves. The answer I got was—we don’t have the authority to take life, only God can do that.

As to how you get to heaven, evangelicals believe it’s NOT up to your works, really, it’s determined by correct doctrine/belief. Your life should reflect that belief, but they define Christian ethics extremely narrowly (and very politically). Which I think is a big reason why you have these MAGA Christians acting so horribly. They think because they are on the right team and believe the right things, they can do whatever they want.

So which character does Joni want to play? The desperate family member trying to unload the old man, or the reluctant executioner? https://youtu.be/uBxMPqxJGqI?si=S-IpkFxWpp4Vmiqq

My guess is that if someone Joni loves dies because they couldn't afford health care, she won't say "Que sera, sera. everyone dies." But I can't be certain. Joni may not be a social Darwinist in real life, but she plays one in the Senate (and town halls).

I love your stuff, but this one really hit the ball out of the park for me. Such a simple message, really, but so elegantly and powerfully stated.

Rev Barber is a present day prophet. His latest book, White Poverty is book white Christians need to read and talk with their friends. His Moral Monday movements call out the weaknesses of partisan politics and focus on Jesus commands to love and care for the poor and hold those in power to account.

He inspires me to love more.

In fairness to the Catholics, the sale of indulgences was more a way to milk the more fortunate than to control the less fortunate.
